COLUMBUS, Ohio (CHARLOTTE SPORTS LIVE) — Charlotte FC staved off a loss to one of Major League Soccer’s most powerful clubs Wednesday, with a 1-1 tie against the Columbus Crew.
The Crown fell behind 0-1 when Crew striker Cucho Hernández found the net at the 31-minute mark.
After a mostly quiet second half, FC tied the match via a goal from Patrick Agyemong. At 83 minutes, FC’s leading scorer got behind the goalkeeper, and when he caught back up to the net, Agyemong put the ball right between his legs for the goal.
The score came just minutes after Charlotte keeper Kristijan Kahlina took a point-blank shot right off the chest and knocked it away. He registered six total saves against the second highest scoring team in the Eastern Conference.
Despite the draw, Columbus dominated possession, maintaining the ball for 69 percent of the match but only had one more shot on goal.
In addition to Agyemong, forward Liel Abada was active offensively. He had four shots, three of which were on target.
The draw comes after Charlotte took down Cincinatti over the weekend. They move to 10-8-6 on the season and sit in sixth place in the East.
Columbus is now 12-3-7.
The Crown has two more games on its marathon road trip before returning to the Queen City July 31.
