CHARLOTTE (CHARLOTTE SPORTS LIVE) — Charlotte FC’s captain will be calling The Fortress home for a few more years.
On Tuesday, the club announced midfielder Ashley Westwood signed a new contract through 2026 with a club option for 2027.
“Life in Charlotte has been an incredible experience for me and my family and I’m extremely happy to re-sign with the Club,” Westwood said. “I joined Charlotte FC at a very rough point following a serious injury, and it’s been a breath of fresh air that has truly revitalized my career. It’s an honor to captain the side, and this city and fanbase is incredible. We know we can reach greater heights, and I’m excited to continue leading this group into the seasons to come.”
Since coming from Burnley FC to Charlotte in January 2023, Westwood has played in 65 matches for The Crown where he has a total of five goals and nine assists. In 2024, Westwood has two goals and has a tie for the team lead in assists with five. He’s played the second most minutes so far this season, behind only goalkeeper Kristijan Kahlina who’s played in every minute this season.
“Ashley has been a tremendous leader and ambassador for our Club over the past two seasons and we’re delighted to sign him to a new contract,” General Manager Zoran Krneta said. “He is a perfect representation of what it means to be a Charlotte FC player, who dedicates himself to the Club both on and off the field. He has been a crucial part of building this Club throughout the last two seasons, and he will continue to be a vital player for us as we all fight for our first piece of silverware.”
With seven games to go in the 2024 MLS season, Charlotte FC is 6th in the Eastern Conference with 38 points. The club’s next match is on Saturday, Sept. 14, on the road against Montreal.
