Young will start at quarterback for the Panthers (1-7) in their Week 9 game against the New Orleans Saints (2-6).
Head coach Dave Canales announced the decision on Wednesday. However, Canales did not commit to Young as the starter for the rest of the season.
“Bryce will be starting this week,” Canales told reporters via David Newton. “We’ll collect all the information over the week with Andy [Dalton], with Bryce, how he plays this week, and then we’ll make another decision next week.”
Young made his third start of the season in Week 8’s 28-14 loss to the Denver Broncos. Young played his best game of the season, completing 24-37 passes for 224 yards, two touchdowns, and two interceptions.
Young started the game over Andy Dalton, who suffered a thumb injury in a car accident in the week leading up to the Broncos’ game.
Dalton is still recovering from the injury, but he should be healthy enough to serve as Young’s backup.
“It really was me taking the decision out of Andy’s hands,” Canales explained on Wednesday (via David Newton). “If you were to ask Andy, ‘Can you go,’ he would tell you, ‘Yes.’ For me, it’s like, he’s a week removed from a thumb injury and I just wanted to make sure that we’re putting him in the right state and the right framework. And I’m excited for Bryce to have another opportunity, to build on the things that we’ve talked about, to continue to just grow and get that experience that we talked about is invaluable, to be on the field, to be calling the plays and be doing it.”

Rookie running back Jonathon Brooks could make his NFL debut in Week 9.
Brooks was selected in the second round out of the University of Texas in the 2024 NFL Draft.
Brooks has been rehabbing from ACL surgery in November 2023. If Brooks is activated, he will join the backfield with Chubba Hubbard and Miles Sanders.
In 2023, Brooks rushed for 1,139 yards and 10 touchdowns in 11 games for the Texas Longorns.
