CHARLOTTE, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — Six months after City Council approved $650 million to fund a renovation of Bank American Stadium, Tepper Sports and Entertainment has initiated the rezoning process for those changes to officially take place.
Documents show the petition filed Monday for the 25-acre stadium site proposes technical changes and additional facilities outside the stadium. It would change the zoning from Urban Core (UC) Special Use Permit and UC to UC with Exception. The site requires a rezoning to a district that falls under the city’s updated Unified Development Ordinance.
“We’ve initiated the stadium rezoning process as it is a necessary step for the renovation,” a spokesperson for TSE said.
The renovations are projected to cost a total of $1.3 billion, with Tepper funding the balance beyond the taxpayer funds.
As part of the improvements, there are plans for new seating, improved accessibility throughout the stadium, safety and security enhancements, a reimagined South Lawn Pavilion area and restroom upgrades. Work is expected to begin in 2026.
The rezoning does not include the changes being made to the practice facility. City planning staff would have to review the petition before going to City Council for approval.
