Having a former offensive lineman as a General Manager fail to address needs up front is hard to fathom. If Chicago Bears GM Ryan Poles wants to save his job, it starts with addressing the various needs on the offensive line.
Reshaping the Bears Offensive Line: Potential Free Agent Targets
Potential Free Agent Targets for the Bears
G Trey Smith, Kansas City Chiefs
If the Kansas City Chiefs can’t finalize an extension with Trey Smith, he should immediately become the Bears’ top target in free agency. Widely considered the premier free agent this offseason, Smith will command a significant salary—a price the Bears can afford to pay.
A dominant run-blocker, Smith would provide much-needed stability to an offensive line that desperately needs it. Since entering the league in 2021, he’s missed only one game, demonstrating remarkable durability. He’ll become a cornerstone of the offense for years to come if the Bears are able to land him.

T Ronnie Stanley, Baltimore Ravens
Former First Team All-Pro Baltimore Ravens tackle Ronnie Stanley is scheduled to become a free agent after this season, and the Ravens might decide to move on from him to allow some younger guys to start. At age 30, Stanley still has plenty left in the tank and would be a massive addition for the Bears.
Braxton Jones has been serviceable at left tackle but has struggled against bull rushes this season. If the Bears are serious about developing Caleb Williams, it starts with getting an elite tackle to protect his blindside.
T Patrick Mekari, Baltimore Ravens
If the Ravens re-sign Stanley, Patrick Mekari becomes an excellent alternative for the Bears. Mekari’s versatility—having played both tackle and guard this season—makes him an underrated option. His agility and adaptability have been crucial for the Ravens in replacing key departures, and he would be a cheaper and younger signing for Chicago.
C Austin Corbett, Carolina Panthers
Carolina Panthers center Austin Corbett unfortunately went down against the Bears with a season-ending biceps injury. That likely signals the end of his time with the Panthers, and it gives the Bears the perfect opportunity to snatch him during free agency.
Coleman Shelton has been a disappointing acquisition for Chicago, often getting overpowered and exposing Caleb Williams to sacks. If the Bears want to focus on developing their franchise quarterback, it’s time to find a better option at Center. Corbett was having a fantastic season sliding into the center spot for the Panthers, so it’s a shame he suffered a devastating injury.
C/G Brady Christensen, Carolina Panthers
With the Bears needing to address both center and guard, finding players who can play both positions is vital. Panthers offensive lineman Brady Christensen is just that, and after getting minimal opportunities to start this year, could look to go to another team for better opportunities.
Christensen’s experience includes stints at tackle earlier in his career, giving the Bears a swiss army knife up front. A move to the Bears could benefit both sides, addressing multiple needs in one signing.
