The Baltimore Ravens gave Lamar Jackson the opportunity to negotiate with other teams by using their non-exclusive franchise tag Tuesday.
Shortly after this major development, reports quickly took two top suitors out of the running.
ESPN’s Dianna Russini said the Atlanta Falcons won’t make a play for the star quarterback. Neither will another NFC South team. Per The Athletic’s Joe Person, the Carolina Panthers aren’t expected to pursue Jackson.
The Panthers can certainly use a quarterback upgrade. Baker Mayfield posted a 74.4 quarterback rating before getting released. While Sam Darnold played better down the stretch, they acquired Mayfield last offseason because Darnold faltered the previous year.
However, Carolina might be more inclined to draft a future starter with the ninth pick.
If Jackson agrees to a deal elsewhere, that team would owe the Ravens — who have the opportunity to match any contract — two first-round picks as compensation. Jackson will make $32.4 million next season if he signs the one-year tender.
Jackson reportedly wants a fully guaranteed contract in line with the $230 million deal the Cleveland Browns gave Deshaun Watson last spring.
