CHARLOTTE (CHARLOTTE SPORTS LIVE) — Panthers star linebacker Brian Burns has been traded to the New York Giants, according to an NFL report.
In return, the Panthers receive a second-round pick in the upcoming NFL Draft and a 2025 fifth-rounder, league sources say.
Burns was subsequently given a five-year, $150 million contract, with $87.5 million guaranteed.
Burns, a two-time Pro Bowler, was the Panthers first-round draft pick in 2019. In five years with the team, he recorded 46 sacks, 246 tackles and two fumble recoveries. He will be 26 at the start of the 2024-25 season.
The team says it placed the franchise tag on Burns earlier this month and discussed a possible contract extension with his representatives at the combine. But those didn’t lead to a deal.
The Panthers will have a lot of work on rebuilding the defense now as former teammate Frankie Luvu reportedly agreed to a three-year deal with the Washington Commanders.
