CHARLOTTE, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — The Butler High School girls flag football team is headed to play in the inaugural NFL flag football championship.
The Carolina Panthers held a special sendoff for the Matthews school’s team Wednesday morning, and cheered them on as they embark on their journey to Canton, Ohio.
“It’s a really big step because people all the time are like, women can’t do this, women can’t do that,” said one Butler athlete. “Being here shows is representing that we are here to do it and we might even be better than some people.”
The athletes got the blue carpet treatment ahead of their departure.
Nearly 2,900 players participate in the event, to be held July 19-21 at the home of the Pro Football Hall of Fame. All 32 NFL teams are represented there.
