Bryce Young had his best day of training camp in the Carolina Panthers’ final training camp practice.
One day after the Panthers’ defense intercepted him twice, Young did not turn the ball over against the Jets, and flourished despite missing his number one receiver. He spread the ball around to many receivers, as David Moore, Jonathan Mingo & Chuba Hubbard made key catches in the 7-on-7 and team periods.
The day amongst the receivers, however, belonged to Terrace Marshall, Jr., who set the tone with a corner route catch high-pointing the ball over the Jets’ DJ Reed. Marshall then threw the ball in Reed’s face after the touchdown reception, starting the first of couple of fights during practice.
Jets defensive back Chuck Clark made a play which started another melee, with his crunching hit on Hubbard, who slipped and injured his knee before the blow. Hubbard was able to walk off under his own power, and Panthers Coach Dave Canales said initial testing on his knee turned out positive.
Panthers offensive lineman Chandler Zavala wasn’t as fortunate, as he came up limping with a hamstring injury, which Canales said the team is “concerned about” being a long-term issue. Zavala’s absence comes on the heels of the news that cornerback Dane Jackson will miss about six weeks with a hamstring injury and safety Xavier Woods will miss a couple of weeks with a groin issue.
Carolina did survive a scare with offensive lineman Robert Hunt, who initially headed off the field on the cart with a knee injury, but later returned to finish practice fully. The Panthers made another roster move involving an offensive lineman on Thursday after practice, adding Mason Brooks to the room while waiving Nash Jensen with an injury designation.
The Panthers defense was not outdone on the day as they intercepted Jets first-team quarterback Aaron Rodgers twice in the practice as Alex Cook & Trevin Wallace victimized Rodgers. New York did get a touchdown drive out of the final drive for their first-team offense, however, helped in large part by a long defensive pass-interference penalty from D’Shawn Jamison. It has been an up-and-down camp for Jamison, who also had an interception of a Jets backup QB during the 7-on-7 portion. The inconsistency from Jamison and the injuries to Jackson and Woods could very well force the Panthers’ hand to hit the waiver wire on more secondary help.
