The Carolina Panthers are going to make a change at quarterback for Week 3.
According to Joe Person and tom Pelissero, Carolina Panthers head coach Dave Canales is planning on starting Andy Dalton at quarterback for the team’s Week 3 game against the Las Vegas Raiders.
Panthers are benching Bryce Young in favor of Andy Dalton, per league source and as @TomPelissero first reported.
I wrote today about why the move needed to happen:https://t.co/66XlvE5pga— Joe Person (@josephperson) September 16, 2024
The team was always hurling in that direction in record time after Young’s start to the season. The second year quarterback showed no improvement and if anything has looked like he’s regressed in a new system with a better supporting cast. Instead of enduring the pain for a few more weeks, Canales has pulled the plug and will shift to the veteran Andy Dalton for Week 3.
Dating back to last season, the Panthers have scored a total of 13 points in their last four games. In those games, Young threw for 451 yards with zero touchdowns and four interceptions.
You could almost see the coaching staff giving up on Young in real time during the loss to the Chargers. Even with the Panthers down big in the second half, the team tried to lean on their run game and Young was relegated to throwing quick hitters around the line of scrimmage. This is the passing chart of a quarterback that the coaches do not trust.
So with that, the Bryce Young era in Carolina has been put on pause if not ended entirely. Andy Dalton threw for 361 yards and two touchdowns in his one start last season (which also came in a Week 3 trip out west, coincidentally). The Panthers will be hoping to get some sort of similar production this weekend.
