Why do the Panthers continue to mess around with young, productive DT Jayden Peevy?
The Carolina Panthers front office is busy throughout the season with transactions, roster moves, and injury updates. Here’s what’s happening at Mint Street this week.

Transactions
Released DT Jayden Peevy from the practice squad. The Panthers should just stop the “snip-snap, snip-snap” with Peevy. The third-year player has appeared in four games for Carolina this year and registered six tackles, 1.5 sacks, and three quarterback hits. His 67.7 PFF grade is solid. That seems like the type of production from a young player the Panthers should keep in-house, right? Apparently not.
The Panthers first waived Peevy on October 8th then re-signed him to the practice squad the next day. They’ve now released him for a second time. Carolina doesn’t have a stable of young, productive defensive tackles, so why keep messing around with a guy who is second on the team in sacks in just four games?
Signed OLB Cam Gill. The 26-year-old vet was plucked off the Detroit Lions practice squad. While he hasn’t appeared in a game this year, he has played in 40 career games with 29 tackles and 2.5 sacks.
Signed DE Jonathan Harris. Carolina signed Harris from the Miami Dolphins practice squad. While he is yet to play in 2024, last year he appeared in all 17 of Miami’s games with five starts, recording 43 tackles, one sack, and four tackles for loss.
Released OLB Marquis Haynes. The most consistent and productive role player on the Panthers defense over the last several years has been released. After a highly productive six-year stretch considering he was primarily a backup, Haynes wasn’t re-signed for the 2024 season. The Panthers then signed him in early October and in Weeks 6-7 he racked up a healthy seven tackles. Despite this, Haynes was released and his reps will likely go to a player who fits in the Panthers long-term rebuild.
Released OLB Shaq Lawson from the practice squad. The Shaq Lawson experiment has seemingly come to an end. He appeared in one game with no stats for the Panthers.
