In a move that felt inevitable after yesterday’s result, the Panthers have decided to bench their former first-round pick, Bryce Young, after an 0-2 start, for veteran QB Andy Dalton. Young completed 18 of his 26 passes yesterday for 84 yards and only attempted three passes of 10 yards or more downfield.
All off-season, rookie head coach Dave Canales was tasked with rebuilding the second-year signal caller, after a disastrous rookie season, that saw his head coach fired in November, and back-to-back shutouts to end the season. Canales opted not to play Young in the first two preseason games but played him for a drive in the finale against Buffalo, which saw Bryce engineer a touchdown drive.
All of that work in the off-season and the preseason went out the window, when Young threw an interception on his first attempt of the season, in a blowout loss to New Orleans last week, where it appeared that he had regressed even from last season. Yesterday was the confirmation, as Young’s footwork had him jumping when throwing basic passes, and looking to escape clean pockets, as his offensive line allowed only 4 pressures, on 29 dropbacks.
With the loss to the Chargers, Young fell to 2-17 as a starter in the NFL and was off to a worse start than recent busts in the first round, including Zach Wilson and JaMarcus Russell.
Andy Dalton was brought to Carolina to help mentor Bryce Young, but is now tasked with bringing the Dave Canales offense to life, and salvage what already feels like a lost season, even just two weeks old.
The Panthers return to action this Sunday, at Las Vegas, and it’ll mark the second start of Andy Dalton’s career in Carolina.
