We’re counting down the days until the Panthers kick off the 2024 season.
We’re officially 5 days away from the Carolina Panthers kicking off the 2024 NFL season against the New Orleans Saints. That’s right, we’re less than a week away, y’all! It will be their second consecutive road opener. Now it’s time for our annual roster countdown to highlight the players on the Panthers’ roster. Today, we’re taking a closer look at the player wearing the the No. 5 jersey—wide receiver Diontae Johnson.
A rare DJ for DJ trade in the NFL sent cornerback Donte Jackson to the Pittsburgh Steelers and brought Diontae Johnson, a former third round pick from the 2019 NFL Draft, to the Panthers. This exemplified Carolina’s offseason philosophy of going all-in on offense at the expense of their already talent-strapped defense.
Johnson has billed as an Adam Thielen-type receiver with plus speed. That is to say that he is both quick and a highly proficient route runner. He is exactly the kind of receiver who, in theory, will pair well with Bryce “the processor” Young.
In his career to date, Johnson has logged 391 receptions for 4,363 yards and 25 touchdowns. His fewest yards receiving in a season were 680 in his rookie year and he has once crossed the 1,000-yard receiving mark. He did that in 2021, the year he was also named to the Pro Bowl.
