We’re counting down the days until the Panthers kick off the 2024 season.
We’re officially 48 days away from the Carolina Panthers kicking off the 2024 NFL season and it’s time for our annual roster countdown to highlight the players on the Panthers’ roster. Today, we’re taking a closer look at No. 48 — linebacker Cam Gill.
Gill played his college ball with the Wagner Seahawks before signing as an undrafted free agent in 2020 by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The 6-foot-3, 240-pound linebacker made the Bucs 53-man roster as a rookie and registered six tackles in 12 games, playing almost exclusively on special teams. During Gill’s first NFL season Tom Brady led Tampa Bay to a Super Bowl title and Gill did his part in the big game. In the third quarter he teamed up with Ndamukong Suh to sack Patrick Mahomes, each getting credit for half a sack.
In 2021 he appeared in 13 games and in addition to special teams duties he played 100 defensive snaps and recorded 11 tackles and 1.5 sacks. He missed the 2022 season with injury but returned to Tampa Bay in 2023 appearing in 15 games with 12 tackles and one sack. He was waived by the Buccaneers following the 2023 season and now calls Carolina home.
Gill has played in the postseason in each of his three healthy NFL seasons, appearing in eight playoff games with five tackles, half a sack, and one forced fumble.
All said, Cam Gill has appeared in 40 career regular season games with most of his action coming on special teams. He has played 768 special teams snaps and 184 defensive snaps, recording 16 tackles and 2.5 sacks.
At 26 Gill has a good blend of NFL experience and gas still left in the tank. Given his ability to contribute on special teams and the Panthers general lack of both talent and depth at linebacker, it wouldn’t be all that surprising to see Gill end up as one of those guys who the Panthers cut, then resign to the practice squad, then cut again, then bring back to the practice squad, and then he ultimately place him on the 53-man roster at some point toward the end of the season.
