We’re counting down the days until the Panthers kick off the 2024 season.
We’re officially 47 days away from the Carolina Panthers kicking off the 2024 NFL season against the New Orleans Saints. It will be their second consecutive road opener. Now it’s time for our annual roster countdown to highlight the players on the Panthers’ roster. Today, we’re taking a closer look at the player who is wearing the No. 47 jersey — linebacker Josey Jewell.
Jewell began his professional career with the Denver Broncos after being selected in the fourth round (106th overall) in the 2018 NFL Draft. He saw most of his snaps on special teams before becoming a full time starter at inside linebacker in his third season. His 2021 season was cut short due to injury, but her returned to form the last two seasons in Denver. Jewell played for Panthers defensive coordinator Ejiro Evero with the Broncos in 2022, and he had arguably his best season. Jewell set or tied career highs on tackles, tackles for loss, interceptions, forced fumbles, and pass breakups despite only playing in 13 games. That production and familiarity with Evero led the Panthers to sign Jewell to a three year deal this off-season.
Jewell played his college ball at Iowa and was a tackling machine for the Hawkeyes. He averaged over 125 total tackles his sophomore through senior seasons. He showed flashes of being a capable blitzer and ball hawk at times, but inconsistency in those areas led him to fall to the fourth round of the Draft. Still, Jewell won the Big 10 Defensive Player of the Year and was named a unanimous All-American following his senior season.
