We’re counting down the days until the Panthers kick off the 2024 season.
We’re officially 24 days away from the Carolina Panthers kicking off the 2024 NFL season against the New Orleans Saints. It will be their second consecutive road opener. Now it’s time for our annual roster countdown to highlight the players on the Panthers’ roster. Today, we’re taking a closer look at the player wearing the the No. 24 jersey — rookie RB Jonathon Brooks.
Brooks has a real chance to make an impact as a rookie this season. The second round pick out of Texas compares favorably to Rachaad White, who was Dave Canales’ main running back last year with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
The main speed bump at the start of Brooks’ NFL career is going to be his recovery from a college injury. He tore his ACL late last season against TCU and is currently a threat to start the season on the physically unable to perform (PUP) list. He has already been announced as not being available for the preseason.
That’s actually OK for a crowded Panthers running backs room. The team still has to decide how to balance the talents of Chuba Hubbard and Miles Sanders, while Raheem Blackshear’s versatility as a runner and returner is likely to earn him a roster spot as well.
Brooks landing on the PUP list during roster countdowns would require him to sit out at least the first four weeks of the season, giving Canales some time to sort out his preferred rotation of backs.
