We’re shining a light on Heroes of the Game who have given so much to our communities and young people everywhere.
Kansas City Chiefs safety Deon Bush shares the life lessons that his father, Gary “Doby” Bush, taught him from a young age, including the importance of serving the community. Now, the two-time Super Bowl champion uses his platform to give back to the community where his journey began.
My dad is definitely my hero. Being here at his old stomping grounds, Southridge, he spent 30 years here doing community work. Just to see all these kids out here having a good time, he would have said, ‘Well done.’
Gary was a teacher at Miami Southridge High School beloved in his community for his spirit and generosity. He dedicated his career to uplifting the youth — when he wasn’t teaching, he helped young athletes in need by providing opportunities to get involved in sports. His family and friends reflect on the incredible impact that Gary made on his community.
Uncle Doby was an extraordinary person. You know it takes a lot when you already have your own family and then you give selflessly to others. That’s what he did, whether it was coaching, whether it was mentoring kids. Investment in the community and being good stewards is just something that was ingrained in us. We were raised that way.
Following his father’s passing in 2017, Deon continues to uplift the next generation. Through his scholarship foundation, Doby’s Dream Foundation, and his annual youth football camp, the Super Bowl champion uses his platform to inspire and empower young athletes in his hometown of Miami and beyond.
My goal is to see these kids investing in each other, investing in the community, investing in mankind.
The NFL athlete reflects on how his dad shaped his vision growing up. He taught young Deon that no matter how successful he became, his impact on others was what mattered most.
Football is just a tool for me to reach other people. And that’s something that my dad was just so strong about. It’s not about getting resources for myself. It’s about what you do with your resources and how you impact others.
