Last week, Hurricane Helene made its way across the state of North Carolina, leaving behind significant damage in the western part of the state, wiping away entire communities, all while leaving behind a cleanup effort that will take years to repair communities lucky enough to withstand the stand. It’s in times like these, that we are reminded how special our connection to our local sports teams is. While sports exist as a source of entertainment and a distraction, whenever tragedy strikes, they are often the first to engage, and help out the local or national community.
That’s exactly what the Charlotte Hornets did earlier today, donating $1 million dollars to Hurricane Helene relief, following Panthers and Charlotte FC owner, David Tepper, who also made a sizeable donation over the weekend as well.
Here is the statement the Hornets released, when announcing the donation: Hornets Sports & Entertainment has announced a $1 million commitment to aid in Hurricane Helene relief efforts throughout the Carolinas. The category four hurricane has left millions without power, forced thousands to seek refuge in local shelters and has destroyed nearly 70 major roadways. HSE’s donation will be distributed equally between The American Red Cross and Second Harvest Foodbank of Metrolina to address the most critical and immediate areas of need: food, water, shelter and emergency supplies. Fans are encouraged to join us in supporting these organizations. Visit hornets.com to assist our neighbors in need. Hornets Sports & Entertainment is committed to uplifting and aiding the communities we call home recover from this disaster and will release additional relief efforts in the coming days.

The relief effort didn’t stop there on the WFNZ airwaves though, as during Charlotte Sports Today, as Jeff Rickard was joined by Kaitlyn Connolly of the Red Cross, and she outlined how locals can get involved with the relief effort moving forward.
