It was originally reported on Thursday afternoon that Canales was taking the Panthers job before the team announced it on Thursday night. He’s their seventh head coach in franchise history.
Canales was the offensive coordinator of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers for this season after spending over a decade with the Seattle Seahawks. He held a variety of roles with them, including wide receivers coach, quarterbacks coach, and passing game coordinator.
He now takes over a team that went just 2-15 this season. He’ll be tasked with turning around a franchise that hasn’t gotten to the playoffs since 2017.
The Panthers have finished below .500 in six straight seasons and seven of the last eight.
