CHARLOTTE (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — As the buzz around renovations to Bank of America Stadium continues to grow, the Charlotte City Council is once again preparing to review important zoning changes tied to the project.
The council revisited a zoning application Monday evening that, when approved, would allow developers to move forward with updates to the home of the Carolina Panthers.
Queen City News anchor Will Lewis reports that while the city’s zoning board has already recommended approval, a few revisions to the initial plan prompted another look.
The application called for a zoning shift from “Uptown Core” to “Uptown Core with Exception,” a change that allows for some flexibility while still aligning with the 2040 Comprehensive Plan.
Among the exceptions? Enhancements to pedestrian access around the stadium. The plan includes two key pathways: one connecting Morehead Street and Mint Street, and another extending an existing walkway near the Panthers’ practice facility. These paths aim to improve walkability and accessibility for both event-goers and the general public.
Another priority is environmental preservation. Panthers Stadium, LLC, the developer behind the project, has pledged to work closely with the city’s urban forestry officials to preserve as many trees as possible. A new South Lawn Pavilion is also in the works, envisioned as a community hub where fans and neighbors can gather on game days, or even just enjoy the space on a quiet weekday. The area will double as an outdoor classroom and event space.
City leaders unanimously approved the updated proposal at shortly after 5 p.m. Monday, April 21, during their zoning meeting at the Government Center.
