Jordan Staal gets a hattrick and the Canes outscore Toronto
The Carolina Hurricanes fell behind, 2-0 less than eight minutes into the game but the home team fought back to tie the game before the end of the period and went on to defeat the Toronto Maple Leafs, 6-3 on Thursday night at the Lenovo Center.
Jordan Staal had a hattrick to lead his team to a needed win.
Eric Robinson got things started and Staal scored his first of the night just 17 seconds after Robinson’s tally to tie things up.
Staal scored his second just 35 seconds into the second period off a nice feed by Jordan Martinook. The goal was a shorthanded tally.
Shortly after that goal, Austin Matthews scored his 14th of the season to make it 4-3 but Carolina rookie, Jackson Blake scored his ninth and the Canes were cooking.
The home team had a lot of time in the Toronto zone and started the control the game at this point.
Staal tipped in a Brent Burns shot just 20 seconds into the third to complete his hattrick and to give the Canes a 5-3 lead.
Pyotr Kochetkov made a few key saves down the stretch and Seth Jarvis scored an empty netter to close it out.
The win broke up a five game winning streak for the Leafs.
The Canes will play Vancouver tomorrow night in a back-to-back situation.
