Canes win wild one to even season series with Devils.
The Carolina Hurricanes stuck with their game plan and finally got rewarded as they defeated the New Jersey Devils on Saturday night, 5-2 at the Lenovo Center.
The win gave coach Rod Brind’Amour 300 career wins. The coach accomplished this in just 488 games and was the fastest to achieve this in NHL history!
It didn’t some easy though as the Canes had to come from behind twice to get the win.
After the Devils scored early in the second period to take a 1-0 lead, Dmitry Orlov blasted in a shot to tie it up with just 30 seconds left in the period.
The visitors would take a 2-1 lead just 1:05 into the third period but Sebastian Aho got the puck past Jake Allen to tie it up again, just 51 second later.
Things got a bit crazy later in the period when Timo Meier was given a major after a knee-on-knee collision with Martin Necas.
The replay looked bad as Necas’s knee buckled and he went down in a heap. He was slow to get up but luckily he was able to return to action shortly afterward.
Later during the ensuing powerplay, Jackson Blake tipped in a Jesperi Kotkaniemi shot to give Carolina the lead.
Just a bit later, Erik Haula knocked Orlov into the boards which looked like with a high elbow and the teams came together again. Orlov skated to the bench for a towel, but then skated back out and jumped Haula, taking him to the ice.
After the game, Orlov complained that he felt it was a dirty hit.
The good news other than picking up the win is that the Canes stood up for each other in this one. Kotkaniemi was especially involved.
Jack Roslovic scored the last two goals, one of them an empty-netter to close out the scoring. He now leads the team with 16 goals.
Next up for Carolina will be a match up against the Jackets in Columbus on New Year’s Eve.
