Newcomers contribute as Carolina wins fourth in a row
The Carolina Hurricanes got three goals from their two new players as they defeated the Winnipeg Jets, 4-2 on Sunday evening at the Lenovo Center.
Mark Jankowski, who the Hurricanes acquired on trade deadline day from Nashville for a fifth round draft pick, scored two goals in his debut for Carolina.
Logan Stankoven, part of the package of assets the Canes received from Dallas for Mikko Rantanen, also scored his first as a Hurricane.
Late in the first period, Jankowski got things started when he broke up a Winnipeg pass, got the puck to Scott Morrow, who fed him the puck back. The new Carolina forward had some space and was able to beat goalie, Connor Hellebuyck to make it, 1-0.
It was Morrow’s first career NHL point.
About five minutes into the second period, Jankowski struck again when he battled his way in the front of the net to make it, 2-0.
Stankoven lit the lamp 2:34 into the third during a powerplay when he redirected a Shayne Gostisbehere shot in the net. It was Stankoven’s 10th of the season.
Seth Jarvis scored an empty-netter to close out the scoring for Carolina.
The Jets scored two meaningless goals late in the game.
The Canes outshot the Jets 27-22 and went 1-6 on the powerplay. The penalty kill was perfect for the night.
The victory gave the Hurricanes four wins in a row. They will continue their homestand against the Lightning on Tuesday night.
