Sebastian Aho notches another game-winner in overtime for Carolina
Once again, the Carolina Hurricanes fell behind 2-0 in the first period but they were able to get things going in the second as they defeated the Chicago Blackhawks, 4-3 in overtime on Monday night in the windy city.
Down 2-0, Seth Jarvis and Sebastian Aho combined for a shorthanded goal one minute and change into the second period. Jarvis notched his 16th of the season on the play.
It is not the first time that Carolina has used a shorthanded opportunity to gain some momentum after their even strength play goes stale.
A few minutes later, Eric Robinson found Jesperi Kotkaniemi in front of the net and “KK” made no mistake, tying the score at two.
But Chicago would score again with just 19 seconds left in the period to retake the lead.
It would take awhile, but Jordan Staal patiently waited then found a puck that goalie Petr Mrazek could not find, and tucked it into the net to tie things up with six minutes and change left.
It was Staal’s 1300th game as well as his 700th career point.
With the score tied, the game went into overtime where Martin Necas and Aho teamed up for the win. Aho scored his 4rth overtime winner this season.
Frederik Andersen played well in his return to action and the goalie made a few key saves to keep Chicago’s total at three. In all he made 22 saves on 25 shots.
It was Andersen’s 500th career game.
The Canes had 48 shots on goal, they had 24 of their shots blocked, and they missed the net 19 times for a total of 91 attempted shots for the game.
Brent Burns went down with an injury and left action for a few minutes, but returned. He still had the second highest time on the ice for Carolina with 22:25. Slavin had a team high 26:21.
Next up will be a game in Dallas on Tuesday night.
