Pyotr Kochetkov made 22 saves and earned two assists as Carolina topped the Rangers.
The good news is that the Carolina Hurricanes did not allow a goal late in a period against the Rangers like they have done the past couple of games. The bad news is that they allowed one just 17 seconds into the game.
The Canes were able to overcome the early deficit though and defeated the New York Rangers, 3-1 on Sunday afternoon at Madison Square Garden.
Pyotr Kochetkov had an exceptional game between the pipes and made 22 saves on 23 shots. The goalie also picked up two assists which tied the most in a game for a goalie in franchise history.
He also leads the NHL in scoring for goaltenders so far this season.
The Hurricanes tied the game midway through the second period after a hardworking play by William Carrier. The winger battled his way to the front of the net and poked in a rebound for his fourth of the season.
Later that period, Jack Roslovic got high-sticked to the mouth. He drew a four minute powerplay for Carolina.
Ironically enough, Roslovic was able to return to action and scored late during that same powerplay to make the score, 2-1. The goal was his 14th of the season.
The Canes outshot the Rangers that period 16-8.
The score remained 2-1 until Sebastian Aho scored an empty-netter late, to close it out.
The win broke up Carolina’s five game road losing streak (0-4-1).
The Canes will travel to Nashville for a game Monday night.
