Canes get some “puck-luck” to defeat Boston
The Carolina Hurricanes were outshot and arguably out-played but they were able to get key goaltending and timely scoring to defeat the Boston Bruins, 3-2 on Thursday night at the Lenovo Center.
Seth Jarvis netted the game-winner with just 18.6 seconds left in the game after the Boston defenseman’s stick broke on a pass and the puck went right to him in front of the net. Jarvis made no mistake and notched his 24th goal of the season.
Pyotr Kochetkov made 32 saves on 34 shots to earn the win.
Sebastian Aho scored his third shorthanded goal of the season when he stole the puck and waited out goalie Joonis Korpisalo to make a nifty backhander and make it 1-0 early in the first period.
Former Hurricane, Morgan Geekie tied the game with just a minute or so left in the period.
Brent Burns scored his fifth of the season about two minutes into the second period when his pass to the front of the net hit a Bruin and bounced past Korpisalo to make it, 2-1.
Geekie would tie things up again in the third with his second of the game.
The Carolina thought they had taken the lead off another deflected shot, this time when a Taylor Hall shot found its way into the net, but the play was challenged and it was determined that Jack Roslovic was offsides on the play.
A couple of minutes later, Jarvis worked his magic and the Canes earned the two points they were looking for.
The Bruins outshot the Canes, 34-23 for the game but Kochetkov was up to the task. The Canes played with five defensemen because Riley Stillman was injured in the first period. Brind’Amour said after the game that he didn’t think it was serious.
Stillman was playing because Dmitri Orlov got “nicked up” at the morning skate and couldn’t play this game.
After the game, Jarvis, Aho, and Brind’Amour said that the pressure of the trade deadline was on everyone’s mind and they will be happy tomorrow afternoon when it will be over.
Next up will be the Winnipeg Jets on Sunday evening at the Lenovo Center.
