The Canes extend point streak to seven games with win over Chicago
The Carolina Hurricanes defeated the Chicago Blackhawks, 3-2 on Thursday night at the Lenovo Center. The win gave the Canes seven straight games in which they earned at least one point.
The bug is hitting Carolina as Sebastian Aho and Taylor Hall were too ill to play. After the game, Rod Brind’Amour said that a few other players were not feeling their best either.
Ryan Suzuki was called up from Chicago at the last minute and made it just before game time. It was his first NHL game and the center said the afternoon was such a rush he didn’t have a chance to get nervous.
Even with Suzuki, the Canes still skated down one forward.
Before the game there was a nice ceremony for Frederik Andersen, who had recently played his 500th game, a noteworthy achievement for a goaltender.
Pyotr Kochetkov played this game though and made a few key saves on high danger chances for the home team. The two goals he allowed were both on breakaways.
He made 18 saves on the 20 shots he faced.
The Canes started out well and dominated puck possession. The Hawks did not have an official shot on goal until well past the midway point of the first period.
Seth Jarvis got things started with a shorthanded goal about 16 minutes into the first. Juha Jaaska made a beautiful play and got the lone assist.
Jaaska was credited with another assist a bit later and registered his first career NHL two point game.
That was the 20th goal of the season for Jarvis.
Chicago tied things up before the end of the period on a breakaway chance, on just their second shot of the game.
In the second period the Canes got cooking. Mikko Rantanen scored his first as a Hurricane off a nice set up by Jack Roslovic.
About a minute later, Jaccob Slavin knocked in a rebound to make it 3-1.
Connor Bedard would score on a breakaway in the third period to make things interesting, but that would complete the scoring for the night.
The Canes have Friday off and will next face the Kings on Saturday night.
