Sebastian Aho comes through in overtime once again
Sebastian Aho netted his league leading fifth overtime game-winning goal this season as the Carolina Hurricanes defeated the Calgary Flames, 2-1 in overtime on Sunday night at the Lenovo Center.
Aho is also the franchise leader with 62 game-winning goals.
The Canes started on time this game and held the Flames without a shot on goal almost the entire first period. Carolina ended up outshooting Calgary that opening period, 12-1.
The problem was that even though the Canes dominated, they could not register a goal that period.
The Flames came out cooking in the second and took the game over for a bit. Pyotr Kochetkov was equal to the challenge though and held the fort.
Later in the period, Carolina started to take over again.
With just 35 seconds left in the period, Jackson Blake fed Jaccob Slavin at the doorstep and the Canes skated into the dressing room with a 1-0 lead after two periods.
The third period was a bit of a wild one. About seven minutes into it, Carolina was called for two penalties, giving the Flames about 43 seconds of a two man advantage.
Just four seconds after the two man advantage expired, Nazem Kadri beat Pyotr Kochetkov to tie the score.
Kochetkov played well this game, stopping a few odd man advantages and grade A chances. He finished making 15 saves on the 16 shots he faced.
Later in the period, the Canes were awarded a four minute powerplay, but their powerplay units could not light the lamp.
The game then went into overtime where Aho performed his magic.
The Hurricanes will next travel to Detroit for a game against the Red Wings Tuesday night.
