Raleigh, N.C. – After a weekend full of celebration for Carolina Hurricanes legend Eric Staal, the Hurricanes capped off Staal’s jersey retirement with the annual alumni game. Staal was accompanied by the likes Rod Brind’Amour, Cam Ward and Justin Williams along with a long list of Hurricanes greats. The Hurricanes Alumni were joined on the ice by the North Carolina State IcePack, who took home the win in a thrilling 7-6 game.
Mike Commodore would open up the scoring early on, followed by goals from the recently retired Eric Staal and Hurricanes Head Coach Rod Brind’Amour. By the second period, all hope looked to be lost for the young IcePack team, however a pair of goals from Jake Gifford brought it within one. In the third period, Hurricanes/Whalers alumni and current UNC Head Coach Steve Rice would score on the IcePack.
Things would get very interesting as NC State freshman Daniel Prazma would tie things up for the IcePack. In the final seconds, Eric Staal would be handed a tripping penalty which allowed freshman Jake Gifford the chance at a game-winning penalty shot. Prazma would do just that, recording a hat-trick and clinching the game for the IcePack.
Here is the entire lineup as provided by the Hurricanes.
