The Celtics attempted 28 free throws to Charlotte’s nine, 17 of those by Tatum, who returned to the court without a hitch Saturday after that flagrant foul from Williams, who considers Tatum one of his closest friends. According to an NBA source, the two did talk following Friday’s game, with Williams apologizing for the hard foul. Tatum initially did not want to speak with reporters for a second consecutive night; he eventually agreed, but did not want to discuss Williams or the incident. “I don’t really want to talk about it,” Tatum said. “Got ready for the game today. We came to Charlotte, did what we was supposed to do, and going to Atlanta and try to get another win before we go home.”

There’s a lot you take for granted with this #Celtics team. Tatum making good decisions. White and Holiday being rocks every night…
We’re at the point where Luke Kornet giving them solid minutes is a foregone conclusion. Incredible given where he was 3 years ago. – 10:50 AM

Fitting end to a big first for Tatum. Don’t think I’ve seen him hit a 3 trying to draw a foul off-balance like that. Just did it to score 13 pts on 4/6 FG, 1/3 3PT, 4/5 FT in the 1Q. 38-24 BOS – 6:39 PM

The most impressive part of Jayson Tatum is the confidence level of his game. He has the mindset that he’s the best player on the floor and he acts like this all game long. The whole vibe is contagious and a big reason behind Celtics success. #DifferentHere – 8:11 PM

More on this storyline
Tatum never mentioned Williams by name and said he’s not going to get into any personal battles with opposing players. “I don’t ever make it about one person,” he said. “I understand who I am, who I am in this league and come out and play the right way. It’s not about a matchup or anything. Just come out and try to dominate and give my team the best chance to win, playing the right way. Whether that’s scoring, rebounding, screening for other guys. The objective is to make sure we give [ourselves] the best chance to win. It’s about no situation. No other person.” -via Boston Globe / November 4, 2024
Gary Washburn: Was told Grant Williams and Jayson Tatum did talk after Friday’s game. Williams was apologetic. Tatum was apparently still annoyed but accepted. #Celtics #Hornets. -via Twitter @GwashburnGlobe / November 2, 2024
“I think at the time of the game, that’s probably what stressed the Flagrant Two,” Williams told CLNS Media’s Bobby Manning. “It was a transition opportunity, and I was trying to make a play on the ball. I did reach across his body, and probably when you slow down the replay, it looks like I kind of make a play and just kind of go after it. “JT is one of my closest friends in the league. There was no intentional trying to harm him in any way. It was just one of those plays where fast, full speed, he passes the ball, which probably makes it worse. When I reached for the ball after the fact, the ball was already out of his hand. I don’t think it leads to anything if it’s not escalated after the fact. You see me raise my hand, say I fouled him trying to take the foul in transition, got held up by teammates, and walked away.” -via BasketNews / November 2, 2024
“I had a relationship with Charles before, because we went to Basketball Without Borders two years prior, so I’d known him from that,” Grant Williams said on Friday. “So when he got the job, I texted him immediately. I was like … we always talked about you coaching me, and I thought it was gonna be in Milwaukee, and that you would go to Boston, and I thought I was gonna be in Boston, and I’m not in Boston anymore, and now it’s in Charlotte. “It’s really cool to have him here. The first thing we talked about is just getting guys together … we had a group chat with Melo, myself and everybody else trying to just communicate … (Lee) did his actual job being with the Celtics, but also checking in on us, making sure we’re doing our thing, making sure we’re prepared for this upcoming year and giving tidbits on what he wants and expects.” -via Boston Sports Journal / November 2, 2024
