South Carolina head coach Dawn Staley was asked by an Outkick reporter if she believes that transgender women should be allowed to play in her sport.
The question came at Saturday’s national title pregame press conference. Staley didn’t hold back her thoughts on the question, saying that yes, they should be allowed to.
“That’s the question you want to ask, I’ll give you that. Yes, yes. So now the barnstormer people are going to flood my timeline and be a distraction to me on one of the biggest days of our game, and I’m okay with that. I really am.”
While Staley’s thoughts on the matter are newsworthy, some are bothered by the timing – and circumstances – surrounding the question.
“Actually would have been totally ok with her declining to answer at that moment. Yes this is an important topic and issue but this will most definitely derail the focus of her team and organization to some degree and magnified by a billion if her answer was no. You can tell she has the weight of the world on her shoulders as she’s processing. It’s unfortunate but here we are. Tough spot to be in for anyone. Regardless of beliefs…” one fan wrote.
“One it’s not a major issue, it’s a right wing talking point that had no business being asked. This is why the players and frankly fans are sick of the media for clown questions like this. And you’re a clown for asking it,” one fan added.
“The NCAA is extremely stingy with credentials yet allows this bum,” one fan added.
I asked South Carolina head coach Dawn Staley if she supports transgender women (biological males) playing women’s college basketball.
“If you consider yourself a woman and you want to play sports or vice versa, you should be able to play.” pic.twitter.com/SEQCsNiFvm
