South Carolina’s women’s basketball team will celebrate a dominant season at the nation’s capital next week.
On Thursday, the school confirmed that it will go to the White House on Tuesday, Sept. 10. President Joe Biden will also welcome the UConn men’s basketball team that day.
Dawn Staley led the Gamecocks to her third national title following an undefeated season. Despite losing the previous season’s entire starting lineup, including No. 1 pick Aliyah Boston, they outscored opponents by a blistering 28.8 points per game behind star center Kamilla Cardoso.
South Carolina culminated a 38-0 year with an 87-75 win over Iowa in the National Championship Game on April 7. The powerhouse program has only nine losses in the last five seasons.
However, Staley’s team didn’t go to the White House after winning in 2017 and 2022. Seven years ago, they declined a delayed invitation by the Trump administration.
Hopefully Biden has no hard feelings about Staley urging Michelle Obama to run for president before Biden decided not to pursue re-election. Kamala Harris will instead run on the Democratic ticket against Trump.
Unlike last year, when First Lady Jill Biden suggested Iowa should join LSU at the White House, there’s been no public talk of the runner-up joining the national champions. Yet Staley’s squad will share the celebration with Dan Hurley’s Huskies.
