It turns out some players on South Carolina were rooting for Iowa to defeat UConn in the second semifinal on Friday night.
Last year, South Carolina was upset by Iowa in the Final Four. That ended what was an undefeated season for the Gamecocks.
South Carolina guard Raven Johnson admit that she was pulling for a rematch with Iowa once she saw how the bracket played out.
“I was definitely hoping for a rematch,” Johnson told reporters Saturday.
Johnson has been adamant about the 2023-24 season being a “revenge tour” for the Gamecocks. They’ve certainly played like a team with revenge on its mind.
“There’s no better feeling than hopefully beating the team that beat you last year,” Johnson added. “I think that would complete the revenge tour.”
Johnson scored 13 points in South Carolina’s blowout win over NC State on Friday. She’d love to have a similar performance this Sunday against Iowa.
As of this moment, ESPN’s matchup predictor gives South Carolina a 73.3 percent chance of avenging last year’s loss to Iowa.
Tipoff is set for 3 p.m. ET on ABC.
