Prior to defeating Iowa in the national championship game this past weekend, South Carolina coach Dawn Staley was asked whether or not transgender athletes should be allowed to compete in women’s sports.
Staley’s answer went viral on social media in a matter of minutes.
“I’m under the opinion of, if you’re a woman you should play,” Staley said. “If you consider yourself a woman and you want to play sports or go vice versa, you should be able to play. That’s my opinion.
“… So now the barnstorm of people are going to flood my timeline and be a distraction to me on one of the biggest days of our game – and I’m okay with that, I really am.”
During an event at a Raising Cane’s this Wednesday, Fox News Digital asked South Carolina star Kamilla Cardoso about Staley’s comments regarding transgender athletes.
Cardoso reportedly ignored the question. Instead, she kept the focus on this afternoon’s event.
Transgender athletes’ participation in women’s sports has been a controversial topic for well over a year now. That won’t change anytime soon.
We can’t fault Cardoso for steering clear of this subject. Besides, her current focus is on the upcoming WNBA Draft.
