Lawing spent two stints as South Carolina’s defensive line coach from 1989-1998 and 2006-2012. He coached future NFL stars Jadeveon Clowney and Melvin Ingram.
The Gamecocks finished 11-2 in each of his last two seasons, allowing just 18.2 points per game in 2012 behind 43 sacks, 13 from Clowney.
Lawing worked alongside several decorated head coaches, including Steve Spurrier, Jimbo Fisher (Florida State), and Nick Saban (Michigan State)
“Very saddened to hear the news of Brad Lawing passing away,” former South Carolina quarterback Erik Kimrey wrote. “Coach Lawing was a legend in the coaching profession. He could tell old ball stories with the best of them. Brad was one of the best and most beloved Gamecock assistant coaches of all time.”
