South Carolina women’s basketball coach Dawn Staley is enjoying this Saturday’s game between the Chicago Sky and Indiana Fever, and rightfully so. This is her first chance to watch Kamilla Cardoso in the WNBA.
Cardoso had an incredible career at South Carolina, winning two national championships and earning SEC Defensive Player of the Year.
During the first half of today’s game, Staley revealed that she cried when Cardoso stepped on the court.
“I’m crying real tears watching @Kamillascsilva,” Staley wrote on X. “I know her mom and sister are super proud!”
Cardoso’s mother and sister live in Brazil. They had the chance to watch her play college basketball for the first time ever on senior day.
Before the 2024 WNBA season even started, Staley raved about the potential of Kamilla Cardoso and Angel Reese in Chicago.
“Kamilla is the ultimate competitor,” Staley said, via On3. “Angel Reese — ultimate competitor. We had a lot of battles, last year and this year. We were the top-2 teams in the SEC, so you know they are enemies by nature because of rivalry. But now they’re joined hands in hopefully bringing a WNBA championship to Chicago. I’m a fan. I’m gonna get me some season tickets. I know I won’t be there the entire season. But somebody’s gonna be sitting in my seats cheering Kamilla Cardoso on.”
Cardoso’s pro career is off to a good start. She already has six points and four rebounds off the bench for the Sky.
