CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (WNCN) – Major changes appear to be on the horizon for the University of North Carolina men’s basketball program.
UNC head coach Hubert Davis is promising major institutional adjustments to evolve with the volatile, ever-changing landscape of college athletics.
During his weekly radio show on Monday night, Davis said the university plans to expand the resources within the Tar Heels basketball program, similar to the way the school did for Bill Belichick and the football team. He said these additional resources include a larger staff, and the hiring of a general manager.
“We’re going to hire a GM,” Davis said during the “Hubert Davis Live” radio show with play-by-play announcer Jones Angell on Monday.
“I am going to increase the staff, and it’s needed,” he added. “I never would’ve thought four years ago when I took the job that 100% what is needed is a general manager. There’s just so much stuff out there.”
The fourth-year UNC coach mentioned the program also needs a director of marketing and fundraising for name, image and likeness, a video coordinator, a recruiting coordinator, as well as a graphics coordinator.
“All those different types of stuff that have to be built out, whether it’s from specific hires or grad students,” Davis said.
“The old model for Carolina basketball just doesn’t work,” he continued. “It’s not sustainable. It has to be built out, because there’s so many things in play with NIL, the transfer portal, agents, international players. You just need a bigger staff to be able to maintain things. You need a bigger staff so I can do what I’m supposed to be doing, and that’s coaching basketball.”
When asked what he meant about his “old model for Carolina basketball” remarks, Davis clarified he was referring to “staff-wise, not the foundation of this place. That’ll never change.”
His comments come days after the Tar Heels suffered a blowout, humbling defeat on the national stage at the hands of bitter arch-rival Duke, losing 87-70 at Cameron Indoor Stadium.
Davis and his UNC squad hope to rebound this upcoming weekend, as the Tar Heels (13-10, 6-5 ACC) host Pittsburgh at the Dean E. Smith Center in Chapel Hill on Saturday afternoon.
