CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (WNCN) — A wrestler who competes for the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill has been suspended from the team after being charged for seriously injuring another student during an altercation, an arrest warrant shows.
The warrant shows 23-year-old Jace A. Palmer punched the victim and significantly damaged two of his teeth on Monday. He was arrested by the Chapel Hill Police Department two days later, according to court records.
Arrest records show Palmer is facing a felony charge of assault with serious bodily injury. He was released on $5,000 secured bond and is scheduled to appear in Orange County court on Nov. 18.
Palmer is a redshirt junior from Wyoming who’s been a member of the UNC wrestling program for three seasons. He represented the Tar Heels at the 2023 and 2024 ACC championships, according to his wrestling profile on the UNC athletics website.
School records show the victim is also a UNC student.
CBS 17 reached out to UNC athletics, which provided the following statement:
“We are aware of the situation, we are cooperating with all relevant authorities, and Jace Palmer has been suspended from the wrestling team. We expect all of our student-athletes to abide by all laws and serve as positive members of our campus community.”
