CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (WNCN) – North Carolina football coach Mack Brown has reportedly made a decision regarding his future of leading the Tar Heels.
Brown is telling those close to the program, including staff members, players and recruits, that he plans to remain in Chapel Hill beyond the 2024 season, CBS Sports and 247Sports reported on Wednesday.
This decision comes after months of speculation about Brown, who turned 73 years old earlier this year, possibly retiring at the end of the season.
Brown is close to finishing his sixth year of his second stint with the Tar Heels. He previously coached UNC from 1988 through 1997 before accepting the same job at Texas.
Since returning to Chapel Hill in 2019, he’s compiled a 44-31 record, including an Atlantic Coast Conference Coastal Division championship two seasons ago.
During a Wednesday appearance on SiriusXM College Sports Radio, Brown was asked about the idea of retirement, to which he replied: “There’s going to be a day I wake up and say, somebody else needs to do be doing this, and I haven’t gotten to that yet.”
UNC officials have not commented in recent months on Brown’s future as head coach following the 2024 season. He’s under contract through the 2027 season.
The Tar Heels (6-4, 3-3 ACC) travel to play Boston College on Saturday at noon.
