CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (WNCN) — A day after they first faced off in the Chapel Hill Regional, the host North Carolina and defending national champions LSU will battle again at Boshamer Stadium.
The bracket’s top-seeded Tar Heels (44-13) and No. 2 Tigers (42-22) are scheduled to start play at 6 p.m. Sunday. After winning Saturday night’s game, UNC has had the morning and afternoon to rest, while LSU had to defeat Wofford in an elimination game earlier this afternoon just to earn a spot in this contest.
The Tigers were down to the Terriers early in the game, but unloaded late to end up winning by a score of 13-6 to send Wofford home. Josh Pearson had a three hit, four RBI game for the Tigers, who scored seven runs in the last three innings.
In yesterday’s game between the Tar Heels and Tigers, Vance Honeycutt was the difference, launching two home runs to almost the same exact spot in beyond the left field fence — a three-run shot to open up scoring in the fifth inning, and a solo homer in the seventh. UNC won by a final score of 6-2.
If UNC wins this game, they’ll be the Chapel Hill Regional winners and will move on to the super regionals next weekend, which they will host as the No. 4 overall seed in the country. If LSU wins, the two teams will battle tomorrow for a third time to determine who moves on to the next round.
