CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (WNCN) – A familiar face is following Bill Belichick to be a part of his new coaching staff at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill – his son.
Stephen Belichick, who spent 12 years with his father in several different roles for the New England Patriots, is expected to be hired as UNC’s defensive coordinator, CBS Sports’ Matt Zenitz reported Sunday.
The younger Belichick spent this past season in the same position at the University of Washington. He became an instrumental part for the Huskies’ improvement on the defensive side of the ball, finishing 26th nationwide (324.8 yards per game) in total defense after ending the 2023 season at 99th overall.
During his time with the Patriots, he served as a defensive assistant prior to becoming the safeties coach from 2016 to 2018 and the defensive backs coach in 2019. Stephen then coached the linebackers for four years before landing the job at Washington.
Stephen will head his way to Chapel Hill after Washington’s appearance in the Tony The Tiger Sun Bowl against Louisville on Dec. 31.
The 37-year-old Belichick is joining a UNC football staff that’s loaded with NFL experience, including former Cleveland Browns head coach Freddie Kitchens and newly hired general manager Michael Lombardi.
