CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (WNCN) — After a day in which both games in the Chapel Hill Regional ended with walk-off home runs, host North Carolina and defending national champion LSU are each hoping they can get a win without the late-game drama.
The top-seeded Tar Heels (43-13) and No. 2 Tigers (41-21) will play in the fourth game at Boshamer Stadium so far this weekend. First pitch is scheduled for 5 p.m.
This will be the sixth time the two teams are facing off on the baseball diamond, with UNC holding a 3-2 advantage overall. All three of the Tar Heels’ wins over LSU have come in the College World Series, according to UNC sports information.
Though the teams are the top two seeds in the regional, they each needed to come back in the bottom of their respective ninth innings yesterday just to earn their spots in the winners bracket. With Wofford and LSU tied at 3-3, Steven Milam homered for the Tigers to end the game. Then in the nightcap, Long Island stunned UNC by scoring four runs after getting down to their final strike to go up 8-5 heading into the bottom of the ninth. But the Tar Heels came back, and a grand slam by Gavin Gallaher sent North Carolina to the winners bracket.
The losing team will have to play Sunday at noon against Wofford, who eliminated Long Island in the first game on Saturday. The winner from that Sunday afternoon game will then move on to play the winner of tonight’s game later Sunday night.
