CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (WNCN) – The reigning Atlantic Coast Conference Player of the Year is reportedly making a return to Chapel Hill for one last go-around.
North Carolina guard RJ Davis is “on board to return” for his fifth and final college season rather than declaring for the 2024 NBA Draft, according to a report from CBS Sports’ Matt Norlander.
The report states that Davis will make the official announcement in the next few days.
This comes after fellow backcourt teammate Seth Trimble announced that he’s coming back to UNC after previously entering the transfer portal.
In his senior season, Davis was a force to be reckoned with on the offensive end of the floor, averaging a career-high 21.2 points, 3.6 rebounds and 3.5 assists per game, while shooting 42.8% from the field and 39.8% from behind the three-point stripe.
Davis led the Tar Heels to an ACC regular season title as well as a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament. UNC’s national championship aspirations came to an abrupt end last month after falling to Alabama in the Sweet 16.
The 6-foot guard racked up numerous accolades for his play on the court this past year, such as winning ACC Player of the Year, the Jerry West Award, as well as becoming a consensus/unanimous first-team All-American selection.
Davis is eligible to play a fifth season as a graduate student due to the bonus year of eligibility awarded to athletes amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
