BOSTON (WNCN) — The North Carolina Tar Heels will be playing their 2024 bowl game in the oldest ballpark in Major League Baseball in a matchup that is most traditionally seen on the hardwood.
UNC (6-6 overall, 3-5 Atlantic Coast Conference) earned a bid to the 2024 Wasabi Fenway Bowl. They’ll square up against UConn (8-4) at Fenway Park in Boston on Dec. 28.
The Tar Heels’ last trip to the city didn’t end well — a 41-21 loss to Boston College on Nov. 23 that led to the firing of head coach Mack Brown. The Hall of Famer was allowed to lead the team in their final regular season game against NC State, a game that UNC also dropped and that ended in a brawl resulting in fines for both teams from the ACC. Freddie Kitchens has been named interim head coach and will take the helm in the bowl game.
UConn, a basketball powerhouse in the non-football-playing Big East Conference, is among three independents in the FBS, along with Notre Dame and Massachusetts. The Huskies beat UMass 47-42 in their final regular season game. They played three ACC teams this season — at Duke, against Wake Forest and at Syracuse — and lost to all three.
North Carolina’s head football coaching search made headlines late last week when news came out that the Tar Heels interviewed six-time Super Bowl-winning coach Bill Belichick among their list of candidates.
