BOSTON (WNCN) — The North Carolina Tar Heels are ending their 2024 football season in one of the most historic baseball stadiums in the country.
UNC (6-6 overall, 3-5 Atlantic Coast Conference) and the UConn Huskies (8-5) will matchup in the 2024 Wasabi Fenway Bowl on Saturday. Kick off is set for 11 a.m. at Fenway Park, home of the Boston Red Sox.
It will be the Tar Heels’ last game before Bill Belichick officially takes over on the sideline, as interim coach Freddie Kitchens will be at the helm at Fenway. They will be without star Omarion Hampton, who has already declared for the NFL Draft, and offensive lineman Willie Lampkin, who was a late scratch from the bowl game lineup.
Connecticut is making its second postseason appearance in three seasons under Jim Mora, which is an independent in football because the Big East — the conference it plays other sports in — is non-football league.
It will be the second time in three years the Tar Heels will have played their postseason bowl game in an MLB stadium. In 2022, UNC and and Oregon faced off in the Holiday Bowl, which that year was played at Petco Park in downtown San Diego where the Padres play their home games.
