WASHINGTON, D.C. (WNCN) — The North Carolina men’s basketball team won the regular-season Atlantic Coast Conference title, but the Tar Heels are ready for more.
UNC’s (25-6, 17-3) quest to win the ACC Tournament begins Thursday at noon when they play Florida State (17-15, 10-10) at Capital One Arena.
The Tar Heels are the tournament’s No. 1 seed for a record 27th time and are ranked No. 4 in the AP poll, the highest they’ve been ranked to end the regular season since they were No. 3 going into the conference tournament in the 2018-19 season.
In Saturday’s win over Duke to end the regular season, newly-crowned ACC Player of the Year RJ Davis didn’t have to do too much as Cormac Ryan went off for a career-high 31 points, but the Tar Heels’ leading scorer for the season looks to take the team on a deep run in both the conference and NCAA tournaments.
To earn a date with the Tar Heels, the Seminoles won their second-round game against Virginia Tech. Jamir Watkins scored a career-high 34 points Wednesday to lead Florida State.
Thursday’s game will be the ninth time UNC and FSU play each other in the ACC Tournament. The programs last met in the tournament in Greensboro in 2021, when the Seminoles won the semifinal game by a score of 69-66.
