CHARLOTTE, N.C. (WNCN) — North Carolina men’s basketball has some work to do in the Atlantic Coast Conference Tournament to make the NCAA Tournament, and it starts Wednesday afternoon.
The fifth-seeded Tar Heels (20-12 overall, 13-7 ACC) face the twelfth-seeded Notre Dame Fighting Irish (15-17, 9-12) in the second round of the ACC Tournament. Tipoff in Charlotte is scheduled for 2:30 p.m.
UNC had been on a run at the end of the regular season, winning six games in a row. But that streak was snapped by Duke, who won their matchup 82-69 in Chapel Hill on Saturday night. RJ Davis scored a game-high 20 points to lead the Tar Heels. Ven-Allen Lubin had 11 off the bench and was the only other Carolina player to score in double figures.
Notre Dame began ACC Tournament play on Tuesday. The Fighting Irish won their first round game, edging out Pitt 55-54. Tae Davis led Notre Dame with 11 points, while Nikita Konstantynovskyi also contributed 10 points and nine rebounds.
The Tar Heels and Fighting Irish met earlier this year, matching up on Jan. 4 in South Bend. UNC squeaked by in that game, winning 74-73. Ian Jackson scored 27 in that game for Carolina and Markus Burton scored 23 for Notre Dame.
The winner of Wednesday’s game will move on to face Wake Forest in the ACC Tournament quarterfinal round Thursday afternoon.
