CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (WNCN) — The Diamond Heels are hoping Boshamer Stadium provides friendly confines for them at least one more time this season.
After losing for just the third time at home this season on Sunday, host North Carolina (44-14) will face defending national champions LSU (43-22) play for the third time in the Chapel Hill Regional to determine the bracket’s winner. First pitch is scheduled for just after 6 p.m.
Thanks to star outfielder Vance Honeycutt’s two home run, four RBI effort, the Tar Heels won the first meeting between the two teams on Saturday evening by a score of 6-2.
Then on Sunday night, the Tigers, who had to come from behind to beat Wofford in an elimination game earlier in the day, took an early lead against UNC and never looked back. Outfielder Josh Pearson had a big Sunday for LSU, hitting a home run and two doubles against the Terriers and then another home against the Tar Heels.
North Carolina threatened late in the game Sunday, getting the bases loaded in their half of the ninth inning on a single and two walks with just one out. But LSU pitcher Gavin Guidry got Luke Stevenson to strike out and Gavin Gallaher, Friday night’s hero, to fly out to force Monday’s Game 7.
Tonight’s winner will move on to next weekend’s NCAA super regional round to face West Virginia, the winner of the Tucson Regional. If UNC, the No. 4 team in the country, can defend home field, they’ll host super regionals at The Bosh.
