CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (WNCN) — North Carolina women’s basketball has moved up a spot in the AP top 25 rankings and has a huge rivalry game coming up this weekend. But first, they’ll have to get past Virginia Tech at home.
The No. 12 Tar Heels (21-4 overall, 9-3 Atlantic Coast Conference) host the Hokies (16-8, 7-6) Thursday night. Tipoff at Carmichael Arena is scheduled for 7 p.m.
UNC rallied to win 53-51 at Clemson on Sunday behind Reniya Kelly’s 17 points and eight rebounds. Maria Gakdeng also chipped in 12 points and nine boards for the then-No. 13 Tar Heels.
Virginia Tech’s most recent win came at rival Virginia on Sunday. In their 87-62 win, the Hokies were led by Carys Baker and Matilda Ekh, who scored 17 apiece. Four Virginia Tech starters recorded double-digit scoring in the Hokies’ balanced offense.
Up next for the Tar Heels is a huge rivalry game against No. 10 NC State in Chapel Hill on Sunday afternoon.
