FOXBOROUGH, Mass. (WNCN) – A former standout on the gridiron for the North Carolina Tar Heels is set to make his NFL regular season debut on Sunday.
According to multiple reports, the New England Patriots are planning to start former UNC quarterback and 2024 first-round pick Drake Maye against the Houston Texans on Sunday.
Maye is slated to be the fourth rookie quarterback to start this season, along with Caleb Williams, Jayden Daniels and Bo Nix.
He played just two seasons in Chapel Hill, starting 26 games and notching a 17-9 record during his college career. But with his high-powered arm and his ability to power his way into the endzone, Maye put up numbers good enough to reach the top five in UNC school history in several categories: tied for third in total touchdowns (79), fourth in touchdown passes (63), fourth in total offense (9,227 yards) and fifth in passing (8,018).
Maye, who was selected with the third pick this past April, was the highest Tar Heel taken in an NFL Draft since the Chicago Bears selected fellow quarterback Mitch Trubisky as No. 2 overall in 2017.
